Hanoi Old Quarter
The Old Quarter is Hanoi's historic center — a dense grid of narrow streets, each traditionally named after the trade once sold there, packed with street food, markets and centuries of history. It's the most popular area for first-time visitors who want to be in the middle of everything.
What the area is like
Known locally as "36 Old Streets," the Old Quarter is busy, colorful and walkable, with motorbikes, street vendors and shopfronts filling narrow lanes at almost every hour. It's louder and more crowded than West Lake, but it puts you within walking distance of most of Hanoi's best-known sights, food and nightlife.
Getting around
Most of the Old Quarter is best explored on foot. Hoan Kiem Lake sits right at its southern edge, and West Lake is roughly a 15–20 minute taxi or Grab ride away. From Noi Bai International Airport, expect around 45 minutes to an hour by car depending on traffic.
What to see nearby
Hoan Kiem Lake and the red Huc Bridge leading to Ngoc Son Temple are within easy walking distance, as is the weekend night market that takes over several streets with food stalls, shopping and street performances. The Old Quarter is also one of the best places in the city to try Hanoi street food, from bun cha to egg coffee, often just steps from your door.
