Old Quarter vs West Lake: Where to Stay in Hanoi
By Ngo Thu Thuy (Jenny), founder of Anamoi Villa · Updated
Most visitors to Hanoi end up choosing between two neighbourhoods: the historic Old Quarter and the leafy West Lake (Tay Ho). They are only 15–20 minutes apart by car, but they feel like two different cities. This guide compares them side by side so you can pick the one that fits your trip — and your group.
The short answer
Choose the Old Quarter for a short first visit when you want to walk out of the door into street food, markets and nightlife. Choose West Lake for longer stays, families and groups, or if you want a quiet base with more space — and take a quick Grab ride into the old town when you want the buzz.
Side-by-side comparison
| Old Quarter | West Lake | |
|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Busy, colourful, full of life day and night | Leafy, relaxed, lakeside |
| Noise | Loud — motorbikes and street life until late | Quiet, especially in residential lanes |
| Walkability | Walk to most famous sights, food and nightlife | Walk to lakeside cafés and restaurants; Grab to the sights |
| Street food | Best in the city, right outside the door | Good local food, plus international restaurants and brunch spots |
| Type of stay | Narrow townhouses, often with stairs and no pool | Bigger houses and villas, some with pools, rooftops and parking |
| To Hoan Kiem Lake | Walking distance | 15–20 minutes by car |
| To Noi Bai Airport | About 45–60 minutes | About 30–40 minutes |
| Best for | Short first visits, couples, food lovers, night owls | Families, groups, longer stays, remote workers |
Staying in the Old Quarter
Known locally as the “36 Old Streets”, the Old Quarter is Hanoi’s historic centre: a dense grid of narrow streets, each traditionally named after the trade once sold there. Hoan Kiem Lake, the red Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple and the weekend night market are all within walking distance.
Why you’ll love it
- Hanoi’s best street food — bun cha, pho, egg coffee — steps from your door
- Walk to most of the city’s famous sights instead of taking taxis
- Lively evenings, especially on weekends when the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake fill with food stalls and street performers
What to know
- It’s loud and crowded, with motorbikes and street life until late
- Homes are narrow, traditional townhouses — expect stairs and, often, no elevator
- Space is tight: pools, gardens and parking are rare
- The airport is further away, around 45–60 minutes by car

Staying in West Lake
West Lake is Hanoi’s largest lake and one of its most relaxed neighbourhoods — a long-time favourite of expats. Streets are greener and quieter, lined with lakeside cafés, international restaurants, yoga studios and spas, and Tran Quoc Pagoda sits on a small peninsula on the lake.
Why you’ll love it
- Quiet nights and slower mornings, with walks or bike rides along the lake path
- Bigger homes: private pools, rooftop terraces with jacuzzis, BBQ areas and parking
- A great mix of cafés, brunch spots and international dining for longer stays
- Closer to Noi Bai Airport — about 30–40 minutes by car
What to know
- You’ll take a 15–20 minute Grab ride to reach the Old Quarter and most major sights
- The area is spread out, so some cafés and restaurants are a short ride rather than a short walk
- Evenings are calmer — great for families, less so if you want nightlife on your doorstep

Which area is right for you?
Choose the Old Quarter if…
- it’s your first time in Hanoi and you’re staying 2–3 nights
- you want to explore on foot and eat street food every day
- you’re a couple or a small group of friends who don’t mind noise or stairs
Choose West Lake if…
- you’re travelling as a family, with children or older relatives
- you’re a group of 8 or more and want to stay together under one roof — see where to stay in Hanoi with a large group
- you’re staying a week or longer, or working remotely
- you’d like a pool, a rooftop or a garden to come back to after sightseeing
Can’t decide? Because the two areas are so close, many travellers stay in West Lake and spend their days or evenings in the Old Quarter. A 15–20 minute Grab ride is all it takes.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the Old Quarter or West Lake better for first-time visitors to Hanoi?
- For a short first visit of 2–3 nights, the Old Quarter puts you within walking distance of Hoan Kiem Lake, street food and the night market. For longer stays, families or groups, West Lake is calmer and offers bigger homes, and the Old Quarter is only a 15–20 minute Grab ride away.
- How far is West Lake from the Old Quarter?
- About 15–20 minutes by taxi or Grab, depending on traffic and which part of West Lake you stay in.
- Is the Old Quarter noisy at night?
- It is the busiest part of Hanoi, with motorbikes, street vendors and nightlife until late, especially on weekends. Light sleepers and families with young children usually prefer West Lake.
- Which area is closer to Noi Bai Airport?
- West Lake. It is roughly 30–40 minutes from Noi Bai International Airport, while the Old Quarter is around 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic.
- Where should families with children stay in Hanoi?
- West Lake suits most families: streets are quieter, there are lakeside paths and parks, and houses are large enough for private pools, rooftops and separate bedrooms.
