West Lake, Hanoi

West Lake (Ho Tay) is Hanoi's largest lake and one of its most relaxed neighborhoods to stay in — a favorite among long-term expats and travelers who want to be close to the city without staying in the middle of its busiest streets.

What the area is like

The West Lake area is leafy, quiet and spread out compared to Hanoi's historic center. Streets around the lake are lined with cafes, small galleries and lakeside walking paths, and the pace is noticeably slower than downtown. It's a popular base for families and groups who want space, privacy and a bit of greenery, while still being a short ride from the city's main sights.

Getting around

West Lake is about a 15–20 minute taxi or Grab ride from the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, and roughly 30–40 minutes from Noi Bai International Airport depending on traffic. Grab (the local ride-hailing app) is the easiest way to get around, and many visitors also rent bicycles or electric scooters to explore the lake path itself.

What to see nearby

Tran Quoc Pagoda, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Vietnam, sits on a small peninsula on the lake and is especially beautiful around sunset. The full loop around West Lake is a popular walk or cycle for those who enjoy being outdoors, and the smaller Truc Bach Lake nearby has its own cluster of cafes and restaurants. For travelers who still want easy access to the Old Quarter's markets and street food, it's a short trip away by car.
