Best Time to Visit Phu Quoc: A Month-by-Month Guide
By Ngo Thu Thuy (Jenny), founder of Anamoi Villa · Updated
Phu Quoc is warm all year round, but the season you choose changes almost everything else: how calm the sea is, how often it rains, how crowded the beaches are and which side of the island is at its best. This guide walks through the year month by month so you can pick the right time for your trip.
The short answer
The best time to visit Phu Quoc is the dry season, from November to April. December to March is the sweet spot for calm, clear water and sunsets on the west coast. The rainy season, May to October, is quieter and can still be enjoyable, but expect showers and rougher seas, especially in August and September.
Phu Quoc’s two seasons
Dry season: November to April
Sunny days, low humidity by island standards and a calm sea on the west coast. This is when the water at beaches such as Ganh Dau and Long Beach is at its clearest, and when the sun sets straight into the sea on most evenings. It is also high season, so prices are higher and the most popular places are busier — especially from Christmas through to Tet.
Rainy season: May to October
The south-west monsoon brings more rain and wind. Showers are often heavy but short, with sunshine in between, so many days still include beach time. The west coast is more exposed to waves during these months, and some boat and snorkelling trips may be cancelled when the sea is rough. In return you get fewer visitors and a greener island.
Phu Quoc weather month by month
| Month | Weather | What it’s like | For a beach trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | Dry season begins | Rain eases, seas calm down; quieter before the holidays | Very good |
| December | Dry, sunny | Calm, clear water on the west coast; busy around Christmas and New Year | Excellent |
| January | Dry, sunny, breezy | Some of the most comfortable weather of the year | Excellent |
| February | Dry, sunny | Great beach weather; busy around Tet (Lunar New Year) | Excellent |
| March | Dry, warming up | Hot, sunny days and calm seas | Excellent |
| April | Dry, hottest month | Very hot middle of the day; plan beach time for morning and late afternoon | Very good |
| May | Rainy season begins | More showers, still plenty of sun between them | Good |
| June – July | Rainy season | Short, heavy showers; west-coast sea becomes rougher | Fair |
| August – September | Wettest months | More rain and wind; some boat trips may be cancelled | Fair |
| October | End of the rains | Showers become less frequent towards the end of the month | Good |
Temperatures stay warm all year, so the real differences are rain, wind and the state of the sea. If you are travelling with young children or older relatives, the cooler, breezier months from December to February are usually the most comfortable.
Best time for…
- Beaches and swimming: December to March, when the west-coast sea is calm and clear.
- Sunsets: the whole dry season on the west coast — Ganh Dau in the north is one of the best places to watch the sun go down over the water.
- Starfish Beach and boat trips: the dry season, when the sea is calmer and trips are less likely to be cancelled.
- VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari and Grand World: any time of year — on rainy-season days, plan these for the mornings or between showers.
- Fewer crowds: November, April, and the start of the rainy season in May and June.
- Families with children: December to February for the most comfortable temperatures, or school holidays in the dry season if you book early.
Holidays and peak dates
The busiest weeks of the year are Christmas and New Year and Tet (Lunar New Year), which in 2027 falls on 6 February. Flights, hotels and especially larger private villas book up first, so for these dates it is worth booking two to three months ahead. If your dates are flexible, the weeks just before or after these holidays give you the same great weather with fewer people.
Which part of the island in each season?
Phu Quoc’s coasts behave differently through the year. In the dry season, the west coast — including Ganh Dau in the north and Long Beach near Duong Dong — is at its best: calm water, clear views and sunsets over the sea. In the rainy season the west coast takes more wind and waves, while beaches on the east side of the island are usually calmer.

Frequently asked questions
